Margie Shabat

Margie Shabat was born Margie Esther Rotter and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Both her parents (of blessed memory) were Holocaust Survivors of World War II. Shabat attended the Shulamith School for Girls and the Samuel H. Wang Yeshiva University High School for Girls. Her later studies included time spent at the Teacher’s Institute in New York, Brooklyn College in New York and Machon Gold in Israel.  In New York City she worked for the Council for Jewish Manpower and in Chicago for the Arie Crown Hebrew Day School.

In 1975 Margie Esther married Mr. Danny Shabat. The couple, Mr. and Mrs. Danny Shabat, relocated to Chicago in 1977 and started their family. Margie Shabat is mother to two sons and four beautiful grandchildren, whom she ‘loves to pieces’.

Margie claims she is “part of a unique group of people whose parents were different and we subsequently absorbed a great many of their issues.” One of the main principles Shabat learned from her loving parents was that an individual can endure almost anything through faith, trust and courage as well as example. She has called upon that courage several times in her life to rise above setbacks and find hope amid several challenges to her health.

Margie Shabat regularly sponsors educational programming on matters related to health and spirituality since she is deeply committed to life long personal growth. Ms. Shabat herself survived dual breast cancer diagnoses in 1997 and then again in 2001. Margie Shabat subsequently began volunteer work counseling other women in her community who were undergoing similar challenges.

She speaks and writes on breast cancer topics and is extremely vocal with regard to the significance of early detection through screening and regular mammograms.  In addition, Ms. Shabat is committed to serving her community and contributes tzedakah to many local Jewish as well as several Israeli charitable organizations.

In her spare time Ms. Shabat enjoys spending time with friends and family, praying and learning, enjoying nature (walking in parks as well as spending time at the beach are special activities), writing, swimming, shopping as well as listening to music.

Ms. Shabat maintains this website where she writes about transcending adversity and leading a joyful and fulfilling life in addition to Judaism, Psalms and other spiritual matters.  She sincerely hopes to thereby inspire and encourage others to traverse their life’s path with true meaning and purpose.

Margie invites you to follow along and explore the journey on the following pages and posts. Her writings and reflections define the real Margie Shabat, a sweet, emotional and spiritual lady who loves life and joy.
